Why election-night results are unofficial, and how the count becomes final

The numbers that appear on Nov. 3 are early returns. Counties and states then canvass and certify the results, on deadlines that vary widely by state.

On election night, state and county websites begin posting vote totals soon after polls close. Those totals are unofficial. They are a first report, and they change as more ballots are counted and checked.

What happens after Election Day

Election officials keep counting after Nov. 3. Depending on state law, that can include mail ballots that arrived on time, ballots from military and overseas voters, and provisional ballots whose eligibility has to be confirmed.

Then comes the canvass: local and state officials review and verify the returns to produce the official results for each jurisdiction. Certification is the formal step that makes those results official.

Deadlines vary by state

State law sets when the canvass and certification must be done, and the range is wide. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures:

  • Oklahoma's state deadline is the Friday after the election, if no contest is filed.
  • Florida's state canvass is due at 9 a.m. on the 14th day after the election.
  • Colorado's state canvass is due no later than the 27th day after the election.
  • Missouri's deadline for offices other than presidential electors is the second Tuesday in December.

Some states do not set a specific state deadline in law.

Three states changed their canvassing rules this year, according to Ballotpedia News. Idaho shortened its county canvass deadline from 10 days to nine, and Nebraska now requires county officials to submit official results to the state by the third Monday after the election. Both changes apply to the Nov. 3 election. Wisconsin changed its deadlines for presidential elections starting in 2028.

What about race calls?

News organizations often project winners on election night based on early returns and other data. A projection is not an official result. When Citizen Observer reports a race call, we say who made it and when, and we link to the state's official results.

Every state's official results page is linked in our Election 2026 hub.
